This homework assignment is named in honor of Major William Addams Welch, the first general manager of the park and the first president of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. He became the Chief Engineer of the Palisades Interstate Park Comission in 1912 and was responsible for the construction of 23 lakes, 100 miles of road and over 100 children's camps. This information and more on Major Welch can be found in Harriman Trails: A Guide and History by William J. Myles. This homework assignment was originally part of the Explorer, but the complete list of points of interest was too extensive for one assignment and the Major Welch was split off to represent the most sigificant modern structures in the park.
